I have never been in an automobile accident in 10 years of driving, and I feel that I would rather just not have insurance. From the quotes I have gotten so far average about $50 a month. I would like to know why I am not allowed as a responsible human being to make that choice. The whole “share the risk” aspect of insurance to me just seems communistic.

Yeah, well, if you run into me on the road and it’s your fault, you better have adequate insurance or plenty of assets for me to take, because you my friend, are responsible for the damage you cause.
You don’t like it, you don’t have to drive.

Operating a motor vehicle is a privilege and not a right. So please just comply with what all the rest of us have to pay for the privilege to drive a motor vehicle on public roads.

If you have enough money available to cover any losses to the other party due to an accident that you cause, you can be “self-insured”. I don’t know what the rules are in Wisconsin, but in many states you have to post a $50,000 bond with the DMV, which they can use to pay for the other party’s damage.

Most States do have a ‘post a bond’ option to the purchase of insurance.
If you can post the bond, you demonstrate ability to be responsible for any
liability from an accident, and need not purchase insurance.

Over a million people per year either file for bankruptcy or default on claim due to not being insured or under insured. Do you have a million or two stuffed under your mattress in case you cause a serious accident?

No, as long as you only drive on your own property the state cannot force you to buy insurance. Further, if you drive on the roads, a privilege not a right, you are only required to buy insurance that covers other people, not yourself (liability insurance). You can also, if you so decide, to insure yourself and your car, but this is voluntary (comprehensive/collision).
Thanks for asking. I hope this clears it up for you.

No, they cannot “force you” to buy insurance.
However, they can make the purchase of insurance a prerequisite to be allowed to drive.
If you don’t want to buy insurance, you don’t have to – you just choose not to drive.
And if you have an accident – imagine, for example, a bee is blown into your eye, you flinch, and smash into the side of my car, causing massive injuries to the four kids in the car – how exactly are you going to pay their medical bills if you didn’t have insurance?

Yes. They can indeed legally force you to buy auto insurance under both the US Constitution and the Constitution of the State of Wisconsin.

If you want to drive, you have to have insurance. There’s no way out of it.

You are probably not alone in that thought at all! There are many of us that might agree with that as well. However, as said below, it is illegal to go without auto insurance in Wisconsin. You can just get the State minimums and leave it at that.
However, do realize that in this country, it seems that people love to sue. So should the possible at fault accident occur, you could pay a fair amount of money out of pocket. And is that worth it to you?
I hope that this helps -
